Show #932
Original Air Date: August 11th, 2006

An estimated 22.4 million U.S. households -- nearly one in four -- now are providing care to a relative or friend aged 50 or older or have provided care during the previous 12 months. So says a recent survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Other surveys suggest that today's Baby Boomers, adults born between 1946 and 1965, likely will spend more years caring for a parent than for their children. If you're 40 or older, you may be among this new generation of caregivers, which is dedicating enormous time, energy and spirit to ensure that aging loved ones are safe, secure and maintaining the best possible quality of life.

This week on Consider This..., we'll explore the option of caring for your parents in your own home. Mary Lou Brasee with the Visiting Nurses Association will be a guest on the show. We'll also talk about the option of placing your loved one in a nursing home or assisted living facility. Cindy Kadavy with Nebraska's Long-Term Care Ombudsman program will also join Consider This... host Andrea McMaster.

The State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program serves as the advocate for long-term care facility residents. Ombudsmen investigate any concern on behalf of a long-term care facility resident and mediate and negotiate to resolve the complaint to the resident's satisfaction. The Program doesn't have the authority to remove residents, revoke licenses of the facility or any personnel, or restrict admissions. It serves solely as the "voice" of the resident. It's the only state program that is totally devoted to the concerns of the long-term care facility resident. Hear more about how this program works this week on Consider This... .
